Have you ever driven down I-190 and noticed small sailboats near the Peace Bridge?

If you have, there is a pretty good chance those boats are filled with high school students from schools scattered around Western New York.

"It's a tough sport to get into but once you're into it, the community is awesome and there are coaches here that just love to teach the sport," Canisius Varsity sailing Co-Director Katie Braungart said. "Sailing uses your memory, your brain, different muscles, it's a great sport to get into if you want a challenge mentally and physically."

Canisius competes against Saint Joseph's Collegiate Institute, Buffalo Seminary, and Nichols, along with other schools from across the country. Students from a handful of public schools can also learn to sail and practice with Canisius.

"It's taught me a lot about being a leader and even self-control, in situations where I'm just really having a tough time, it's helped me a lot to learn how to difficult situations," senior captain Max Balanevsky said. "Buffalo is really a special place to sail and there is a lot of history here."
