Chris Manhertz making jump from college hoops to NFL
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - It's not totally accurate to say Chris Manhertz has never played a down of football in his life.
His only football experience? "Madden," he told reporters during rookie minicamp.
Joking aside, the former Canisius College basketball standout is taking this opportunity, to suit up for the Bills seriously, trading in his controller for more appropriate gridiron attire.
"Putting on a helmet, putting on gloves, putting on cleats, just getting out there, it's like Jesus I'm really out there," he said.
While it's the first real introduction to football for the 23-year old, it's not the first time Head Coach Rex Ryan has brought in a player without a background in the sport.
"Maybe once or twice it works," he said. "More times than not, it doesn't. Certainly he has the desire to see this happen. We'll be patient with him, but it's a long, long process."
And Manhertz isn't making any excuses for himself.
"It's a lot to take in," he said. "My thing is, look like I've been there before."
Rookie minicamp wraps up Sunday with voluntary conditioning continuing Monday in Orchard Park.
