Woodlawn Beach in Hamburg is facing serious financial struggles. The state park lost an average of $85,000 from 2013-2017, according to the Town of Hamburg.
Martin Denecke, the director of recreation, youth, and senior programs for the town of Hamburg, said that there is no concern that the park will close.
"I'm optimistic about it."
Hamburg took over the beach in 2010 after agreeing to a 10-year contract to operate the park. Now that the contract is nearly over, the town is looking to the state for help.
"Both sides have expressed the same goal. We would like to keep this going," Denecke said.
It will take a joint effort to resolve the financial issues. That's why Hamburg is asking the state to take care of some infrastructural needs.
"We don't want to do a parking lot for a state park," Denecke said.
There are two more meetings between the town and state set up for the fall. Denecke says a deal between the two parties could be made as soon as the new year.
