The State Health Department is urging New Yorkers to protect themselves against West Nile Virus.
Human cases of the mosquito borne illness have now been confirmed in Nassau, Westchester and Monroe Counties. Previous cases have been reported in New York City.
West Nile is transmitted to humans and some animals through the bite of an infected mosquito.
The virus was first identified in New York State in 1999. Since 2000, 497 cases and 37 deaths of WNV have been reported statewide, according to the State Health Department.
