One Major with the New York State Police says he’s never seen or heard of anything like what was discovered in the sewer under an Amherst Walmart Parking lot, Monday.

Police found an underground meth lab. It was found by an Amherst Police officer who was on patrol and took a closer look at a nearby culvert. That culvert connected to the sewer that went under the parking lot.

Officers and agents from roughly a half dozen agencies were seen pulling meth-making materials from a manhole in the Walmart parking lot, Monday.

“Something like an underground meth lab, that's new for us. Here in western New York, we predominantly see meth production in the southern tier: Chautauqua County, Cattaraugus County, Allegany County. But we've also had it in the City of Lockport over the last couple of years. But, as far as underground production of meth, that's new to me,” said Major Steve Nigrelli with the New York State Police.

Amherst Police say it's unclear when the meth production site was last used. So far, no arrests have been made.
