Ever stop by the Elmwood Avenue Tim Hortons in the morning? If you have, you’ve probably met Malachi, Nelson and Jordan.
You likely didn’t know their names, but no doubt you’ve left the drive thru lane remembering how they made you feel.
Malachi is the captain and Nelson and Jordan are his first mates. They are there to help keep the line moving and to spread good cheer, dishing out friendly greetings and fist bumps.
For the past four years, Malachi has been manning the drive thru cash register. He started out with cheerful greetings, but then things escalated to fist bumps.
Now it’s become part of this location’s culture. If he takes a day off or goes on vacation, whoever is working the drive thru cash register in his absence can expect a fist bump from customers.
The trio says they deliver hundreds of fist bumps each morning and some times those fist bumps make a big difference in customers’ lives. It’s a small gesture, but Malachi says he’s had customers leave the drive thru lane to come into the store and tell him just how much it meant to them.
For Malachi, Nelson and Jordan, it’s all in a day’s work.
Next time you’re in the Tim Hortons line on Elmwood Avenue during the morning rush, be patient. The wait is made easier by a warm hello, a fist bump and a wish for a better day.
