Things you need to know before putting your kids on a school bus

We're headed back to school and that means you'll be seeing big yellow school buses back out on the road soon!

If you're a motorist, budget a couple extra minutes during your morning commute to make time to stop behind the school buses you've been missing all summer.

We're catching up with the experts at First Student for some tips to keep drivers safe on the roads and for students getting on the bus.

For students:

  • Stand back. You need to be 10 giant steps away from the bus at all times so the driver can see you.
  • Wait for the ok to cross. Look for your bus driver to give you a thumbs up before crossing the street.
  • Use the handrail. It will help you from slipping when you're climbing up and going down the stairs.
  • Sit the right way. If you can, put both feet flat on the floor and your back against the seat.
  • Be still until the bus stops. Wait for the bus to stop completely before you try to get on and before you get up to get off.

For drivers sharing the roadway:

  • Maintain a safe distance. You want enough time to react for when the bus stops to pick up students.
  • Stop for stop arms. Red flashing lights and an extended stop arm means a child is getting on or off the bus. On two-lane roads, come to a stop in either direction.
  • Never pass from behind if a bus is stopped, loading and unloading children. This is illegal in all 50 states.
  • Give students lots of room. Children are within 10 feet of the bus, you want to keep them safe by giving them the space to safely get on and off.

First student is always hiring drivers! There is a $3,000 sign on bonus for experienced drivers. You can make anywhere from $16 to $20 an hour. You can find more information here
