A special project in Hamburg is helping students grow into compassionate citizens.

The Giving Garden came to life in 2009 in an effort to change Union Pleasant Elementary School's lunch food.

"The giving garden is to teach kids where food comes from and to get them to eat healthier to make healthier choices," Tricia Miller, Garden Coordinator, said.

In 2009, Seeds of Living Education, Inc. was formed by parents, teachers to help create this project.

In it's ninth year, students using the garden as a model for healthy eating and nutrition.

Some of the produce is used in school lunches and some is donated to a food pantry.

One of the projects goals: "To involve children, families and the community at large in this living classroom experience through organic gardening, healthy food preparation, healthy school meals, culinary demonstrations and community projects that foster the understanding of healthy eating and its impact on our environment."
