New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia followed through on her promise to keep a close eye on struggling schools by visiting Burgard and South Park High Schools on Tuesday.

The commissioner also met with Buffalo Public School administrators and principals.

In regards to Buffalo's struggling schools, Elia said she wants to see increased support and training for teachers along with initiatives to grow parental involvement.

Elia also said she plans to convene a group, including herself, to review the Common Core curriculum.

Governor Andrew Cuomo recently released a statement on the Common Core standards saying, "The fact is that the current Common Core program in New York is not working, and must be fixed."

Commissioner Elia responded to the comments by saying, "Our teachers, administrators, and parents need to have the opportunity to actually read the standards and make decisions and give feedback on them."
