Downtown Buffalo is on the verge of getting its first new train station since 1952.

The New York State Department of Transportation has awarded Scrufari Construction of Niagara Falls and Hohl Industrial Services of Tonawanda with a $27.7 million contract to build a new intermodal transportation hub on Exchange Street.

The new, elevated station will be built on the site of the existing Amtrack Station, which is 62 years old.

It will be more than double the size of the current station and feature seating for 40 people, additional parking and redesigned platforms that make it easier for passengers to get on and off trains.

An image of a Buffalo will be featured at the center of the station's Terrazzo floor.

The current station will be demolished. A temporary station will serve customers during construction.

The projected is expected to be completed by the fall of 2020.
