Ryan Ball can't believe his father is dead.

"He was the smartest, most generous, caring person I will ever meet in my life and will ever know," an emotional Ball told reporters.

The full break down on what happened Tuesday morning

His home was surrounded by police officers and crime scene tape early Tuesday morning, after police say his father, 69-year-old Norman "Don" Ball was shot in the face by his neighbor, 53-year-old Kyle Johnson.

"I didn't wake up until the roommate came up the stairs and hollered at me," Ball said.

Johnson was arraigned in LeRoy Town Court late Tuesday afternoon. He's facing murder charges among other things. His family has no idea why he would want Ball dead.

"We have no idea of a motive and there may never be one," said the younger Ball. "He was a disabled veteran, he started an orphanage when he was in Vietnam."

"We can't make any sense of it," said John Rider, a family friend. "We are all at a loss of words."

Shortly after killing Ball, police say Johnson walked back to his home and started it on fire. When firefighters arrived on scene to put out the blaze, police say he shot at them, nearly missing the fire chief and safety officer.

For the next two hours, Ball, his young son and other neighbors were on lockdown. Neighbors say they witnessed Johnson pacing around the neighborhood with a shotgun in hand.

He was finally taken into custody without incident.
