A freight train carrying new cars has derailed near East Main Road in Attica.

A spokesperson for the train's operator, Norfolk Southern, says the incident happened around 4:15 p.m. Thursday. The train was en route from Buffalo to Mechanicville, New York, and consisted of two locomotives and 43 rail cars.

According to Norfolk Southern, no hazardous material was being transported.

The train’s two crew members, an engineer and conductor were taken to the Erie County Medical Center, they are expected to be ok.

According to Attica Fire Chief Jay Myers, two engines and approximately ten railroad cars derailed.

Norfolk Southern says they are working with first responders to secure the scene and has environmental specialists en route to clean up a diesel fuel spill.

Crews are currently working to clear the Route 238 and East Main Road intersections and are aiming to reopen around 10:00pm Thursday.

Officials say long-term clean-up of the damaged engines and rail cars could take days.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation but investigators are looking at the possibility that the railroad tracks were washed out by rain and snow-melt.
