The soil near a popular parking lot at Niagara Falls State Park is radioactive.

However, it is not dangerous.

Angela Berti, a spokesperson for the park, said in a statement, “… all compromised soil has been contained, and there is no impact to health and safety.”

A material known as TENORM, technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material, has been discovered in the dirt next to the parking lot across from the Hard Rock Cafe.

Yes, it is radioactive. However, the levels are so low that it is near negligible according to Berti. Crews are working on removing the soil right now, and none are wearing protective gear. They are wearing shirts and jeans.

Thomas DeSantis, the director of planning, environmental planning, and economic development, for Niagara Falls said that this is a common thing to find in Western New York.

“I’m not particularly alarmed or surprised that they found the materials that they found.”

Since it is a state project, DeSantis is not involved in the matter, but said that he is familiar with the material that has been discovered.
