There aren't many places you can go without being caught on camera. Whether it's a cell phone, home or business, surveillance cameras are everywhere.

Because so many people want to protect their assets and their families, these cameras are becoming easier to buy, easier to afford and easier to install.

Molly Poremski of Buffalo purchased her Ring doorbell camera four years ago. 7 Eyewitness News spoke with her in August, after her camera caught a man, urinating on her front lawn in broad daylight.

It's an investment she says she doesn't regret.

Many of the cameras now can be accessed through a smartphone. They're becoming cheaper and easier to install.

Experts say there are some things you need to know when purchasing a camera.

  • Don't buy a camera without night vision
  • You get what you pay for
  • Get a camera with good imaging
  • Always change the default password on the camera
  • Change your WiFi password
  • Place camera in a hard to reach spot
  • Hardwire the camera, don't just rely on batteries
  • Get cloud storage
