New York State Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski believes all dogs are created equally, including pit bulls.
“Look they can be big, strong looking dogs, as can shepherds, as can other types of breeds,” said Zebrowski.
The lawmaker from Rockland County is a pit bull owner himself and he wants to make it illegal for landlords to discriminate against specific breeds of dogs.
“There really is no innate mean quality or lack thereof, it’s really based on responsible or irresponsible pet ownership.”
Zebrowski says the stigma surrounding the pit bull breed needs to change. Under his proposed legislation, housing authorities, apartment complexes and landlords could still prohibit tenants from having dogs, but they couldn’t say one breed is okay and another isn’t.
Currently, the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority prohibits tenants from owning pit bulls.
Assemblyman Zebrowski is hopeful the legislation will pass this year.
