The first of two new tolls on Grand Island was installed today as the Grand Island Bridge is approaching a completely cashless tolling system.

The first toll, which is on the southbound side of the 190 heading from Niagara Falls, is not currently operational.

Drivers will not need to stop with these new tolls. For drivers who have an EZ-Pass it will be scanned similar to how it is currently done. For those without an EZ-Pass, a photo will be taken of the vehicles license plate and a bill will be sent to the drivers' home.

The tolls will look to reduce travel times and pollution among other things. This will be the first change done to the Grand Island tolls in over 80 years and Grand Island Town Supervisor Nate McMurray knows there will be growing pains.

"There's going to  be problems, there's going to be hick ups as we implement this new technology, but the status quo wasn't good enough." McMurray said, "There was too much wasted time, too much pollution, too much frustration. To have some progress, to have a change is a great thing for wny."

The new tolls are expecting to be fully operational by the summer of 2018.
