A letter sent by the Obama Administration Friday directs schools across the nation to let transgender students use restrooms that match their identity.

It's not an executive order. But the document does imply that if schools do not follow the administration's recommendations, the school could lose federal aid or be sued.

The Justice and Education department officials signed the letter and gave recommendations to schools as to how to counter-act discrimination against transgender students.

The new directive comes as the U.S. Department of Justice wages a fight against North Carolina on the issue of transgender rights in that state. The Tarheel state's so-called "bathroom bill" requires people to use the restroom that matches the gender on their birth certificate.
