The American Academy of Pediatrics now says children should stay in rear-facing car seats until they hit the height or weight limit for the seat. This, changing the previously recommended age of two, to four.

"It's not about the age, weight and height are much more important," said Christina Lewis, who led a car seat technician training session at Catholic Health Friday. "People think it's a positive milestone to outgrow a car seat...I use a booster seat because I'm 4'11 and drive a taller vehicle."

It's recommended that children remain in a rear facing seat until they weigh 40 or more pounds. Lewis says to read the manual on your specific car seat to know when your child has outgrown the weight and height limits.

“Let’s stop rushing our kids to grow up, we want to keep them with us the whole time," said Lewis.

Parents can have their car seat installation inspected on the first Saturday of each month at Catholic Health, 144 Genesee Street in Buffalo or at Mount St. Mary's Hospital, 5300 Military Road in Lewiston. For more information visit www.chsbuffalo.org.
