More than 70 passengers on board the Chautauqua Belle had to be rescued Saturday after the steamboat ran aground 100 yards off shore.

The sheriff’s office responded to Gull Road in Mayville near Prendergast Point around 6:20 p.m. after reports came in of the ship getting stuck. A citizen was using a pontoon boat to rescue passengers and deputies began to assist.

A photo from Chaucat.com shows the Belle after the incident with passengers being rescued.

Eventually, five fire departments arrived to help as well as the Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team. All of the passengers were rescued and no injuries were reported.

The crew said strong winds and rough water led to the Belle running aground.
