To truly be a Western New Yorker, you've got to learn to adapt to the weather. Celebrate summer, appreciate fall, make the most of winter and cherish spring. That's exactly the philosophy Kate's Country Cousins in Lancaster has adopted.

The farm market is celebrating 15 years of weather changes and adapting their offerings for the seasons. In the summer, you can buy fresh produce and as the season winds down, they'll teach you how to preserve your peaches as jam to enjoy throughout the year. When it cools down in fall, you can learn to make a decorative pumpkin. Winter? Make a wreath. They're open from April until December.

The roots of Kate's Country Cousins wasn't planted too far away. Owner Kate Jurek's grandmother started an Alden farm in 1923. The family then bought a house later on Broadway in Lancaster and set up a small tent at the end of te driveway to sell their produce. Shortly after that, Kate and her longtime partner Paul, bought the lot across the street and built Kate's Country Cousins from the ground up.

Since then, family members of Kate's, from granddaughters to second cousins have been selling fresh produce from local farms, selling flowers grown locally, serving up ice cream in freshly made waffle cones and teaching craft and cooking classes.

By request from customers, the store started to host classes, both 'crafting wit Kate' and 'cooking with Kate'. You can learn how to preserve your fruit at the peak of summer by making freezer jam, easier than a cooked and canned jam. You can also keep your tomatoes as salsa for a nice snack in the middle of winter. If you want to decorate, you can learn to make a decorative pumpkin or enjoy a glass of wine while making a Christmas wreath.

The family behind Kate's Country Cousins loves seeing families grow up in Lancaster. You can visit them at 6148 Broadway Street, Lancaster. Visit their Facebook page for more information.
