Running into a store? Thinking of leaving your child or pet in a closed car? Think again. With temperatures on the rise authorities are sounding the alarm on the dangers of hot cars.
On Friday officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service sat in a closed cruiser for 10 minutes to demonstrate just how quickly temperatures can become dangerous. "I can tell you in 10 minutes it got up to around 120 degrees fahrenheit." said Phil Gavin the Media Relations Officer for the NRPS. "We think it's invaluable to not only consider the safety of pets in these situations but small children as well."
"A child can't keep themselves cool the same way that an adult can.", said Constable Virginia Moir from the NRPS. "Animals require panting and sweating through their paws. The temperature in the vehicle, the upholstery in the car, even with the window down it's not going to make a difference."
