Just about everyone loves to take a selfie but the New York DMV is warning motorists of the dangers involved with snapping selfies behind the wheel.

A new report by the Auto Insurance Center ranks New York state eighth in the nation for the number of drivers posting selfies while behind the wheel.

This ranking prompted the New York state department of motor vehicles to issue a warning to drivers to put down the phones while behind the wheel.

In the state of New York, It is illegal to talk on a handheld phone as well as writing, sending, or reading electronic data like e-mails, text messages, or websites.

“Taking a selfie is fun and of course it’s a fun place to do it if you or at Canalside or you’re in New York City... there’s a lot of fun things to do. So taking a selfie is a fun thing but it shouldn’t be mixed with driving,” Elizabeth Carey, Public Affairs Manager at AAA of Western New York tells 7 Eyewitness News.

“There are strict penalties from the New York State Police, you get points on your license, you got fines but people also they feel like they get away with it now and then and I think they are doing it more and more.”
