The woman challenging Governor Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic ticket says she would repeal the state's teacher evaluation system if elected.

Cynthia Nixon says the system judges teachers based on how well their students perform on state tests, not on their teaching abilities.

Cuomo's campaign director quickly fired back Thursday, claiming Nixon had prior knowledge of legislation aimed at revising the teacher evaluation system saying, "tomorrow if it rains, will she (Nixon) take credit for that? This legislation was weeks in the making, she knew that, and now she's trying to claim credit where none is due. This isn't leading, it's cynical political grandstanding."

Nixon's announcement came the same day, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie announced the Assembly will introduce legislation to revise the teacher evaluation system.

Frustrations with state testing spurred the "opt-out" movement in 2016.  Many school districts, like West Seneca, reported more than 70% of students boycotting the state exams.
