A law passed in the 1980s may not be sufficient enough when it comes to your protection.
AAA found that 886 backseat passengers 16 and older died because they didn't have their seatbelt on. Of those deaths, 221 were teenagers between 16-18 years old. The study analyzed fatal car accidents between 1995-2014.
The study also found that less than 40% of teens between the ages of 16-18 wore seatbelts in the back of a car.
Current New York Law mandates all people wear seatbelts in the front seat of the car, but not the rear. Twenty-eight states, including the District Of Columbia require everybody in a vehicle to buckle up.
New York passed the first seat belt law in the nation back in 1984.
