New York is cutting down trees at Niagara Falls

Dozens of mature trees are no longer standing tall in the oldest state park in the nation. 

New York is cutting down 73 trees from Niagara Falls State Park. The trees once stood in front of the Visitors Center at the park. A park spokesperson said the trees are being removed to create a more welcoming environment. 

Some people expressed concerns with the project. New York State Parks said this is the final stage of its $70,000,000 revitalization to the American side of The Falls. 

The goal is to create a more seamless path between the park and the city. The state will plant 99 new trees and preserve 125 others. 

“What’s going to happen is those trees are going to become more strategically placed and provide more of a natural landscape, which is more consistent with this park,” Angela Berti with New York State Parks said. 

The final phase of this project should be finished within the next year.
