New York State residents can begin applying for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) on Tuesday, November 13.

The program offers $372 million in federal home heating assistance to help lower-and middle-income families heat their homes. Eligible households can receive a one-time benefit of up to $726.

You have to apply through your county department of social services.

Erie County reminds residents that it has recently moved its HEAP office to the second floor of 460 Main Street, Buffalo, and you can avoid long lines by applying online.

Last year, more than 90,000 households in Erie County alone received HEAP benefits.

The benefits are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
