One in three female deaths in the U.S. every year is due to heart disease. That's one roughly every minute.

According to the American Heart Association, a higher percentage of women die of heart disease (33%) than know it's the leading killer among women (17%). In fact, heart disease kills more women every year than every cancer combined.

"I don't want any of my friends or family to be that one person that doesn't survive," said Kelly Rummings, a heart attack survivor and volunteer with the AHA. "There's still a lot of education and a lot of knowledge we have to get out there."

Rummings survived her two heart attacks within four years of each other. She says National Wear Red Day is an important movement to push women to take action with their own health.

"So often women are looking after and taking care of everyone around them," Rummings said.

She says Wear Red Day should act as a set day to remind the women in our lives to visit their doctor or cardiologist and learn their risk for heart disease.
