Mosquitoes in Erie County test positive for West Nile virus

Several mosquito pools have tested positive for the West Nile virus in Erie County. 

The Erie County Department of Health says the mosquito-borne illness was detected through routine testing. 

About one in five people who are infected with the virus will develop a mild fever or other flu like symptoms. Less than one percent will develop a serious illness. 

Still, health officials urge people to take precautions to avoid being bitten, such as limiting outdoor activities at dawn and dusk, and using an insect repellant with 25 to 30 percent DEET. 

The health department is also reminding the public to wear pants and long-sleeve shirts in wooded areas to prevent the spread of Lyme disease. 

This is prime time for the spread of the disease. Ticks that spread the illness begin their prime feeding activity around the time of the first frost.
