The Lancaster School Board has been plagued with its fair share of controversy over the past year, and many of those topics were looming at the polls on Tuesday.
Two topics that were on the minds of many voters include the transgender bathroom policy and the looming Lancaster Redskins mascot.
There were two seats up for grabs and those have been filled by current school board member Bill Gallagher and his running mate, Sue Metz.
Gallagher and Metz both believed their opponents, Brian Osika and Mary Jo Schaefer, were still focused on the mascot issue, which ended last year when the Redskins mascot was retired and replaced by the Lancaster Legends.
Osika and Schaefer declined to go on camera with 7 Eyewitness News to talk about this or any other issues, but did say the mascot was a non-issue to their campaign and bringing the Redskins back was not on the table.
Metz had to say this about that statement:
"I disagree. I see a lot of 'Redskins, bring back the name' in their circle so I'm not sure how that could be," Metz said. "Or they completely did a reversal of what they said a year ago, but maybe it's not their stance today but it sure was."
Some voters we talked to also felt the same.
"I think the biggest issue for me is the name change," said Nina Wright. "The adults need to stay out of it, the kids spoke last year and I think we should keep it the way it is."
Gallagher and Metz are also both in favor of allowing students to use the bathroom for the gender they identify with. A heated school board meeting back in December ended on this issue when the current school board tabled the topic until another time. The issue hasn't been brought up at a new meeting since.
Just shy of 5,000 people voted in the election. The budget also passed.
