A memorial service was held in Delaware Park Monday to mark one year since the death of 3-year-old Maksym Sugorovskiy.
He died when a driver fell asleep behind the wheel on Rt. 198, and crashed into Delaware Park while Maksym and his sister were walking with their mother on Ring Road. The crash left his sister was severely injured.
"I specifically remember telling him how much I loved him," his mother Mary said. "He rubbed my right arm and told me how much he loved me. Who would have known on that beautiful spring day, that would be our final I love you to each other."
Because Maksym touched so many lives, Ring Road is now officially renamed Maksym Way. His mother hopes those who travel it will have a different appreciation for life.
"With each step we take down this road and throughout our lives, possibly not knowing which way to turn, we can at least try walking Maksym's Way," Mary said.
The Sugorovskiy family planted a tree in his memory, and also unveiled a new park bench which reads, "Maksym Sugorovskiy, we will never forget his kind, gentle caring little soul.
