It's the unofficial start to summer!

For some, Memorial Day Weekend kicked off this morning by waiting in line at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, or by packing up the car with luggage and homemade sandwiches.

People aren't just traveling away from the city, but to the Buffalo area as well. And why not? Who needs to travel all the way to Florida when you can experience the same air mass this weekend right here in the Queen City.

But if you do decide to travel, be advised of an increase in police presence. Police will be on the lookout for distracted and drunk drivers.

If you're heading out on the water, the Coast Guard is asking people to, "wear it." Make sure your life vest is properly fitted and there is enough for people to wear on board, as is required by law. The Coast Guard also requires that the vessel has at least one Coast Guard approved life vest on board as well.

In 2015, 625 people died out on the water. Seventy-six percent of the fatalities were people who drowned.
