It was 2013 when the Buffalo Professional Firefighters Union first asked the Attorney General to investigate Deputy Commissioner Joseph Tomizzi.

The move was made over suspicions that Tomizzi was using the city's technology to conduct unauthorized background checks on members of the department.

For the past two years, union members have claimed nothing came of their requests. But now, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown confirms Eric Schneiderman's office is investigating the city's Fire Investigative Unit.

Deputy Tomizzi was in charge of that department until he stepped down last week, citing personal reasons.

Tomizzi is still employed by the department as a firefighter.
