The Marriott connected to HarborCenter, built on what was once a flat-pad parking lot, officially opened on Monday, less than three years after construction began.

"This facility and part of the goal was to bring people from Sweden, Finland, Russia, and make Buffalo a destination," HarborCenter Owner Terry Pegula said. "We're just starting but we're getting there."

Officials say the final price tag for the project has yet to be determined but falls between $200-$210 million.

"It's one step at a time," Sabres Chief Development Officer Cliff Benson said. "I think for a city standpoint things had to get done but all I'll say is we're not done yet."

The hotel had a soft opening in late August but officially opened its doors on Monday.

The HarborCenter Marriott is part of the half dozen hotels that have opened since the project broke ground. According to Visit Buffalo Niagara, more hotel rooms means more visitors.

When looking at July, Buffalo had a 84.5 percent occupancy rate. In July of 2014, that rate was 75 percent.

Demand is also up 2.8 percent and revenue is up nearly 6 percent year to date.

Rooms in the HarborCenter Marriott start at $219 a night. The hotel offers rooms ranging in price range and size. It also offers a bar, restaurant and lounge.
