A Lackawanna man is going to jail for 25 years to life for killing his young wife.

Daniel Whiting was sentenced Tuesday afternoon. A jury deliberated just under an hour last month to find the 28-year-old guilty of second degree murder.

Whiting stabbed his wife, 21-year-old Ashley Whiting, 30 times in their home last July. He then stabbed himself, claiming that both were attacked by an intruder.

Acting District Attorney Michael Flaherty says the decision most likely came so quickly because of the overwhelming evidence against Whiting.

"This is heartbreakingly said. You have two small children who will never know their mother, and their father might spend the rest of his life behind bars," he said. "This is another tragic reminder of how domestic violence rips families apart."
