The Sheriff's Office in Cattaraugus County arrested the Ashford man accused of neglecting to care for 72 pigson his property at 5119 Folts Rd. and on neighboring property at 5109 Folts Rd. in Ashford.

Based on an investigation started in early January by the SPCA and the Sheriff's Office, 56-year-old Gerald Nason Jr. allegedly failed to provide sufficient food, a source of clean water and sufficient space in a shelter for the pigs.

Nason Jr. also neglected to seek necessary medical treatment for most of the pigs, according to authorities.

Earlier this week, the SPCA and Sheriff's Office were able to seize the pigs and get them into medical care. Pigs in the worst medical condition received medical care at Cornell University by Farm Sanctuary of Watkins Glen.

The rest of the pigs will relocate to local rescue farms. Deputies set bail at $1,000 cash and $2,500 bond.
