"We still have long way to go" are words that resonated through the Michigan Ave. Baptist Church February 17. The Buffalo Niagara Freedom Station Coalition, which owns the church, held an event to remember Civil Rights activists who helped change the nation.
It's called "In Pursuit of Liberty and Life", and included 'living history' re-enactors to take the roles of Mary B. Talbert and Martin Luther King, Jr. among others to speak as if they were still here today. Lillie Wiley-Upshaw, the chair of the Coalition, said the event was to remember where the movement came from, and provide a platform to discuss what still needs to be done.
"It helps to continue to give me hope and inspiration," Wiley-Upshaw said. "Because when you can reflect on what people did to manage those challenging times, it gives you a roadmap to follow for the times we live in now."
She said Black History Month is a great opportunity to pay attention to the issues at hand, but the efforts to change the narrative need to be made year-round.
