The Lockport City Council is expected to vote on Wednesday to make all 27 city parks "Tobacco Free Zones."
Mayor Anne McCaffrey tells 7 Eyewitness News that she expects the rule change to pass.
It turns out that a determined effort led by a group of students from North Park Junior High School, and working with Roswell Park Cancer Institute, may have been the deciding factor in getting the change acted on.
Reporter Ed Reilly spent the day in Lockport talking to students and officials about the issue.
Erie County also has a smoke-free policy for parks and beaches that has been in place since 2012. No one gets arrested but people seen smoking are reminded by park staff about the policy.
Niagara County Parks also have a similar policy.
