BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The University at Buffalo Department of Community Health and Health Behavior has officially proven that the "marijuana munchies" are real.

"Everyone eats, but it seems as though people under the influence, they're choosing more unhealthy choices" Dr. Jessica Kruger said.

This was done through a 2016 study done during the "Hash Bash" in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The study involved giving a survey to people who had smoked marijuana. At the completion of the survey, a reward of either chips or an orange were offered. 63 percent chose the chips. Dr. Kruger says this points to a larger nutritional problem as NYS continue to work towards legal weed.

"As a nation we already have a problem with obesity," Kruger said, "We need to think about this in a larger context."

The exact reasoning for the snacking, whether psychological or something in the marijuana is unknown.

"I don't think anyone has proven the actual pathways."
