BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Students from Nardin and Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart have been selected to take part in a national rocketry competition in Virginia this Saturday, May 18th.
The Team America Rocketry Challenge is the world's largest student rocket contest. It is sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association and the National Association of Rocketry.
The schools beat out hundreds of other schools across the country for the opportunity. Nearly 5 thousand students compete each year.
This year's contest is themed around the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Students must design, build and fly a rocket carrying three raw eggs in a capsule to an altitude of 856 feet and return it to the ground with the eggs intact within 43 to 46 seconds.
The competition is meant to spur interest in aerospace/science careers. Young women are encouraged to take part, something the Buffalo schools will highlight.
If they win, the schools can go to an international rocketry competition in Paris.
