NEW YORK (AP) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is urging the Federal Aviation Administration to ground the new Boeing planes involved in two fatal crashes in less than five months.
The Democratic governor made the remarks Tuesday in a joint statement with Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Executive Director Rick Cotton. The Port Authority operates the New York metro area's three major airports.
The statement said the FAA should "move decisively to assure that the public's safety is protected."
The Boeing 737 Max 8 plane is at the center of a growing global ban by more than 40 countries following a second fatal crash in Ethiopia on Sunday. In the U.S., however, the FAA and airlines continue to permit the planes to fly.
