BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The federal government has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority as it plans an expansion of the Metro Rail.

Congressman Chris Collins announced the funding Wednesday.

He said the NFTA will use the $777,943 grant to zone for mixed-use development along the Amherst-Buffalo Corridor Light Rail Extension project.

Construction on the project is not expected to begin until late 2024 or early 2025.

The grant was awarded through the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) Transit-Oriented Development Pilot Planning Program.

Earlier in 2018, the NFTA Board voted to approve nearly $5 million to fund environmental research to expand the light rail system to Amherst.
