The average cost for a gallon of unleaded gas rose three cents in Buffalo from last week, topping off at $2.39 per gallon.

Nearby cities fared the same, Rochester and Syracuse each saw a three-cent spike, to $2.38 and $2.35 respectively, according to AAA Western and Central New York. All remain lower than the New York State average ($2.43), but higher than the national average ($2.28). The current prices are close to the highest of 2016.

According to AAA, the wildfires in Canada and "supply disruptions in other oil-producing countries" are contributing to higher gas prices. Still, the national average is almost 50 cents lower than it was a year ago.

Higher demand could also contribute to the price hike; AAA estimates more than 38 million people are expected to travel during Memorial Day Weekend, the most in more than a decade.
