Riederer's Kenpo Self Defense in the Town of Tonawanda is teaching kids an important lesson in safety. These days, some parents say it's also a necessary one.

“I remember as a kid just falling asleep day dreaming in the lawn, and now the reality is you cannot ever be too cautious,” said dad, Chris Cappellini.

“It's a very scary thing and you always want to give everyone the benefit of the doubt but at the same time teach them the balance of where to draw the line with stranger danger,” said Cheryl Hereth.

Hereth’s two children are enrolled in Kenpo Self Defense. They’re learning what to do if they’re approached by a stranger. Of course studio instructor Chris Riederer said the goal should be to never give a predator the opportunity in the first place.

“Be aware, travel in groups, and don't walk alone even if it's just to a friend's house down the street.”

Riederer tells students not to wear ear buds in both ears. It makes them less aware of their surroundings and more vulnerable. He teaches kids to be confident, and explains predators often prey on those who are weak and won't fight back.

But, if kids are approached by a stranger, they’re learning how to react. Never yell help because people may not take you seriously. “You yell stranger so it’s very clear to everybody that they need help,” Riederer said.

These steps are helping empower these young students in case they're faced with a dangerous adult. Moms like Cheryl Hereth are grateful.

“It offers a layer of comfort in some of the scary situations that are going on right now.”
