Elevator Alley Kayak is giving kayak tours through Silo City with Explore Buffalo this summer.

The kayaks launch from a dock at Mutual Park in Buffalo's Old First Ward. Before hitting the water tour guide Jason Mendola said going through safety procedures is most important.

"The first thing is to make sure we have a properly fitting life vest," said Mendola. "Then we go through the rules of the river. Kayaks have to stay off to the side because there's a lot of bigger boats that come through here."

The grain elevator tour will last about two-and-a-half hours. Saturday and Sunday tours start as early at 9 a.m.

"We take you from elevator alley usually all the way to the light house," said Mendola. "We check out the fire boat, Riverworks and the other history along the water."

Brad Hahn the executive director of Explore Buffalo said this is just another way to learn more about the Queen City.

"You learn how Buffalo grew to become one of the great cities," said Hahn. "That was because the grain trade and the invention of the grain elevators in 1842 when we saw millions and millions of bushels coming into Buffalo and originally they were all unloaded by hand."

The tours are given by Explore Buffalo's 160 volunteers who, according to Hahn, love the city of Buffalo and telling its story.

Mendola says kayaking has grown at a rapid pace that he's now opening a store equipped with kayaks and all the gear you need to hit the water.

"Our grand opening is July 4th at 65 Vandalia Street which is at the corner of Hamburg Street and Republic Street," said Mendola.
