An inmate has died after attempting to commit suicide in the Erie County Holding Center.

Sheriff Timothy Howard reported Tuesday that deputies discovered Michael Girard just after 1 a.m. Friday morning after Girard used bedding to hang himself in his cell. Deputies performed CRP, deployed an AED and administered Narcan until they were able to regain a pulse from Girard.

Girard was brought to a local hospital where he passed away sometime Sunday.

During his incarceration, Girard was seen multiple times by mental and medical health professionals with the Department of Mental Health and the Sheriff’s Division of Correctional Health.

The Sheriff’s Office has reported the incident to the New York State Commissions on Corrections and the United States Department of Justice. The Sheriff’s Office and the two departments are investigating the incident.
