If the "IRS" calls, hang up! - that's the message from the Erie County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office says it is once again receiving calls from residents concerning people claiming to be representatives from the IRS, looking to settle or collect "back taxes."
This is not a new scam. In fact, the sheriff's office says it regularly receives calls on this issue from concerned citizens.
As a reminder, the sheriff's office wants people to know that no government agency will contact individuals over the phone, demanding immediate payment for back taxes or other government agency actions.
Detectives say these calls are difficult to trace and it's almost impossible to recover a payment once it's made. If you receive a call like this, officials say your best option is to hang up immediately and call police.
