You know Spring's here when the ice boom gets removed...if only it would warm up.

On Tuesday, April 10th -- if weather allows -- New York Power Authority personnel will begin opening the boom's 22 span in Lake Erie - Niagara River.

Last year, the boom opening began on March 6th due to warmer conditions and lack of ice.

The ice boom is installed near the Lake Erie outlet to reduce the amount of ice entering the Niagara River. This reduces ice jams, which can lead to shoreline property damage and reduced water flow for hydro-electric power production.
