Home, sweet home for one Marine Veteran

Lance Corporal Mark Beyers and his family are celebrating their new home thanks to Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

“You don't expect anything like this at all. Overwhelming,” he said.

In 2005, while on road patrol in Iraq, Beyers was injured by an I.E.D. explosion. The father of two lost his right arm and leg. Recovery meant dozens of surgeries and months away from his family.

Beyers' wife, Denise is a Marine veteran, too. She said they first heard about the Tunnel to Towers organization about a year ago. “We figured well, there's other veterans that have less than we do, maybe they should try and do it for a veteran who could use it even more.”

But, reps for the nonprofit believe few are more deserving than the Beyers family.

Lighting, temperature, and security systems are controlled from Beyers phone. The kitchen has pull-down cabinet shelving so there's easy access to plates, pots and bowls and the stove can adjust to wheelchair height. “It restores their dignity and their independence. It allows, whatever you and I would be able to do in our home, they can do in their home now,” said COO of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation John Hodge.

“It's security. It's mortgage free. It's our forever home, and it's absolutely amazing,” Beyers concluded.
