With resume in hand, Irene Bernhard is at the Career Fest not only prepared, but determined to find a new job. “At one point, I felt worthless,” she said.

The 57-year-old lost her job with the Buffalo News last August. “When we got downsized, it was a sad. It was a sad day,” Bernhard added. After all, she'd been with the company for 21 years. “With the last position, I thought I was set until retirement.”

Bernhard's interested in clerical work. She's been brushing up on various computer programs through the Department of Labor, and she's also turned to online job boards like Monster.com.

Ali Touhey: Have you had any success with your online efforts?

Bernhard: Not yet.

It can be difficult to make an impression online. So, experts suggest taking time to build your network in person, narrowing your applications to a few suitable positions, doing your research before contacting an employer, and networking your way into the company before you apply.

Job seekers like Irene Bernhard are willing to take those steps to land her next job. That, coupled with her efforts at Tuesday’s job fair, leave her feeling hopeful for the future. “It gives you good leads. It gives you something to strive for.”
