The Grand Island Town Board slammed the brakes on a proposed truck stop in the community during a work session on Friday.

According to Town Supervisor Nate McMurray, board members took action and amended the town's zoning law to now ban this type of development.

Friday's vote was unanimous.

Love's Travel Stop is looking to build a large truck stop on 21 acres of land on Whitehaven Road.

An online petition opposing the proposed development has more than 765 signatures. Many of those opposed to the plan believe the truck stop would have a detrimental impact on the environment.

Friday's decision will be heard by the town's Planning Board and by Erie County.
